“Yes, everyone can float in water, but fear can prevent some people from learning. Always have someone there to watch you when you are doing this, they’ll be able to help you with anything while you’re floating.”
– Alan Fang ("how to swim", article for wikihow, last updated January 2023)

Caught in a bleak void, where previously known logics of sensuous orientation elude us, two pals find themselves hanging out. The desolate universe holds space for a non-mission; drifting around imaginary seas.

THE SWIMMER is a duet investigating companionship, loss of space and a paradoxical passing of time within the Virtual. It is an eerie, yet intimate, soft and insisting derailment of linearity. A deeply atmospheric, sorrowful and at times humorous dance piece, which works with movement to an excruciatingly soft detail and cinematic energy, seeking refuge in imaginary landscapes.

  • Lara Vejrup Ostan (b. 1995, she/her) is a Slovenian/Danish freelance choreographer and dancer based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

In her artistic practice she researches the sensuous paradigms and embodiment of work and dailyness, and how motion contributes to the creation of contemporary mythologies. She builds sensuous universes hosting an everyday and mundane, questioning dramaturgical traditions within storytelling and their corpo-socio-political implications. She works with dancing as material and immaterial expression. Other mediums, such as film and text, are used in her artistic practice to mold and carry, or further develop logics of dancing.

Her primary training is within the sphere of contemporary dance (release technique) and improvisational practices, but has extensive experience in other contemporary dance techniques, ballet, ballroom and improvisational theatre as well as acting. She is currently finishing her education as a Somatic Movement Educator in Body-Mind Centering®.

In the past years she has worked as an artistic research mentor, dramaturgical assistant, performer and co-creator with (amongst others): Recoil Performance Group (MASS: Bloom Explorations), Marina Dubia (Desabar - to fall over), Lena Bondeson (Something Else Matters). Most recent residencies have been at HAUT, hosted by RAS Sandnes, Norway, UP in Copenhagen, Denmark and Nau Ivanow in Barcelona, Spain.

She is co-founder of KOMMA Performance Productions, a member driven and collective association, supporting the development and production of dance works. She is chairwoman of VA11a interdisciplinary office collective in Copenhagen and De Frie Koreografer, an association working with structural, legislational and political frameworks of freelance choreographers in Denmark.
